Uneven breasts can do significant damage to the self esteem of women but the fact is just about every woman has one breast slightly smaller or larger than the other. Currently over 45% of women have one breast that is a half cup or larger than the other breast. Breast Asymmetry Disorder is a condition when the woman’s right and left breasts are different in terms of size, position or volume. However women usually do not take any corrective measures since the difference is very small and often not too obvious. In certain cases though when the condition is more noticeable resulting in a difference of over one cup size, women often seek surgical options to rectify the difference says Dr Preeti  Pandya (Cosmetic & Plastic Surgeon at GNH Hospital Gurgaon India).

Difference in the size of a woman's right and left breast may help predict her risk for developing breast cancer so before going for any kind of corrective treatment or surgery proper evaluation should be done.

The breasts start to enlarge during this first stage of puberty due to the effects of the hormone estrogen. The estrogen causes the breast tissue cells to grow and enlarge. Some girls probably have a few more breast tissue cells on one side or the cells may be a little more sensitive to the effects of the estrogen. Very rarely, women can have a marked difference in the size of the two breasts that can be uncomfortable or require surgical intervention.

Types of mismatched or uneven breasts:

-          Breast Asymmetry – Different volume, shape, position, breast crease position

-          Nipple Asymmetry – Different size, shape, height

-          Anterior Chest Wall issues – different shaped chest wall behind the breast

-          There can also be other causes of breast asymmetry, such as postural problems (Scoliosis), other diseases (cancer, Poland’s syndrome or effects of past surgery) and Iatrogenic causes.

What are the techniques for reducing breast asymmetry?

Sometimes entirely different approaches may be required for each breast. There are several different solutions for your Breast Asymmetry:

Smaller breast bigger - Breast augmentation through Motiva Implants

Bigger breast smaller - Breast reduction

Both breasts smaller and symmetric - Breast uplift

Both breasts bigger and symmetric

Nipples repositioning

One Breast Smaller and Other Breast being implanted or lipo-filled (fat transfer)

Dr Preeti Pandya said for recovery patient need to wear compression bra for atleast 4-5 weeks and scars can be corrected by special bandages, gels and tapes along with laser for scars of surgery.
